Getting Axel and Scott Excited

The boys have always loved Old McDonald Had a Farm, and some of their first words were animal sounds, but opening up their world to real animals is such a pleasure. Getting them excited for chicks through fun activities, books, songs, and visiting hatcheries and shops with live chicks has been an absolute joy. But one thing that sticks out as one of the most awesome projects to get them excited for chicks is a cookie coop kit!
A Bit of Background
The boys got this cookie coop kit from family friends as a gift to prepare them for getting their own real-life chicks, and we cannot thank them enough! In that gift, I got a garden sign (yay!) and the boys also got wind up chicks that bounce really fast moving across a solid surface. When I say they love them, I mean they ask for them to be wound up first thing in the morning and throughout the whole day and will search for them if asked where the chicks are.
They thought that those fluffy toys were the best thing ever until they actually realized what was in the box that said cookie coop kit.
But What is It?
This cookie coop kit is similar to a gingerbread house kit. I built the coop so it was three deminsional, and the boys decorated it. There were cookie chickens to decorate as well, and peeps were able to go inside the coop also. Trevor was home when we built the kit, so while I was busy working on my building skills (I am much better with wood and screws than cookies and icing), he was helping the boys decorate the chicken cookies.
Axel immediately realized the cookies were cookies and tried eating them, but once he saw Scott spreading the icing with his finger essentially coloring the cookies, he followed suit. Neither boy discovered the icing was sugar until considerably later.
Once the structure was built, the boys took turns decorating it was jelly bean eggs and flowers. They don't quite understand that you should decorate the outside of the coop so the chickens have a place to sit, but that's alright!
When they ran out of patience for decorating, the boys walked the chickens up the ramp into the coop saying "bock, bock, bock" as the chickens walked up. It was super cute! The chickens did run out of room quickly in their tiny coop. Five peeps and 4 chicken cookies don't fit well in coop no larger than my hand, so they all piled on top of each other to rest.
After the boys finished playing with their food, they enjoyed eating a chicken cookie each. We had them try peeps, but both of them decided peeps aren't their favorite food.
Thank you again so much to those family friends who got the boys their very own chicken coops! They are so excited for chicks to arrive in just a few short weeks!
